FRANCK GAZZOLA, Sailing through the Northwest Passage (Travel (2019))

The Northwest Passage is the shortest way between Asia and Europe. Because of the sea ice, this passage can only be crossed only during a few weeks per year, and not at all during the colder years. The Northwest passage has been the place of many tragedies for expeditions trying to make it through. The route was only opened for the first time in 1906 by Roal Amundsen. The boat picture in this series is about the 260th ever to have ever successfully made it (during the summer of 2017). These pictures have captured this epic journey which remains an incredible challenge, despite the impact of global warming on the Arctic environment.
