Canon’s latest mirrorless cameras, the EOS R5 and EOS R6, offer a number of world firsts that are likely to pique the interest of many.Geared towards working professionals, the EOS R5 delivers 45 megapixel stills at up to 20fps and is the first full-frame mirrorless to be able to record 8K RAW up to 29.97fps internally and 4K to 120p. Meanwhile, the EOS R6 is aimed at enthusiasts and professionals moving to mirrorless. This camera can capture 20.1 megapixel still images at up to 20fps, along with 4K video up to 60p, and Full HD at up to 120p.

The electronic shutters on both the R5 and R6 can capture at up to 20fps in near silence, while the mechanical shutter delivers continuous shooting at up to 12fps. Both also incorporate a 5-axis In-Body Image Stabilizer, designed to work with the Optical IS system of RF lenses to provide an impressive 8-stop image stabilisation – billed as the world’s best image stabilisation. Some non-IS RF lenses, such as the RF 85mm F1.2L USM or RF 28-70mm F2L USM, can also achieve up to 8-stops of image stabilisation.

The processor at the heart of the R5 and R6 is the same as that found in the EOS-1D X Mark III and supports Dual Pixel CMOS AF II pushing speed and reliability to new levels. The cameras also boast the world’s fastest AF focusing speed among interchangeable lens digital mirrorless cameras, with the EOS R5 focusing in as little as 0.05 seconds, and having the ability to focus in light levels as low as -6EV. The EOS R6 is the first EOS camera to offer a minimum EV for AF of -6.5EV.

Advanced tracking via the iTR AF X AF system can recognises faces and eyes of humans, cats, dogs, and birds in both still and movie modes, and the new algorithms mean that even if a person turns away for a moment, their head and body continue to be tracked.

The R5 features up to 100% AF coverage, capable of 5,940 user selectable AF points, along with an ISO range of 100-51,200, while the R6 offers up to 6,072 selectable AF points and a 100-102,400 auto ISO range.

Both cameras also feature built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (EOS R5 - 5Ghz Wi-Fi, EOS R6 - 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi), and can be easily connected to a smartphone and networks allowing high-speed file sharing and FTP/FTPS transfer. This functionality also allows for the cameras to be remotely controlled using the Camera Connect and EOS Utility apps, tethered to a PC or Mac via Wi-Fi or high-speed USB 3.1 Gen 2.

Both cameras are supported by Canon Australia’s local five-year warranty.
