The latest and greatest camera to roll off the production lines at Nikon is their flagship offering, the highly anticipated, full-frame, D5. Taking all that was fantastic about the D4S, Nikon has produced something even better. Central to this latest offering is its speed and precision. The new generation AF system is not only intelligent, lightning-fast, and intuitive, but effortlessly tracks fast-moving subjects to yield sharp images.

Amongst a myriad of new and improved functions and features, the latest generation AF system is particularly impressive. At the heart of this is the Multi-CAM 20K autofocus sensor module, which offers 153 focus points - 99 of which are cross-type sensors. This provides for broad and dense coverage of the entire image area. Of considerable interest to those working in low light conditions, the centre focus point has a detection range beginning at an impressive −4 EV, with detection at other points kicking in at −3 EV, so you can lock focus in extremely low-light conditions, and with low contrast subjects. Coupled with the new AF system is the camera’s ability to capture up to 200 full-size RAW images, at 12 frames per second, in a single burst of continuous shooting, making it an ideal choice for photojournalists and sports photographers.

In another first for Nikon, the camera’s ISO pushes the envelope even further, achieving a maximum ISO of 102,400. For those needing to capture images in even darker conditions, the camera offers an expanded ISO up to an astounding ISO 3,280,000.

The D5 also meets the requirement for anyone shooting video today to be able to capture motion in high-resolution 4K UHD (3840 × 2160)/30p, 25p, 24p. Video can be captured on internal memory cards (either 2x XQD or 2x CF) or, with simultaneous HDMI output, can be displayed on an external monitor or recorded as uncompressed video to an external recorder. Being able to rely on the impressive ISO range, it’s also possible to generate 4K UHD time-lapse movies in-camera.

Some of the other features of the D5 include a high-resolution 3.2-inch touch screen LCD monitor, faster wired networks (via built-in Ethernet connector) and wireless networks, and double memory card slots that use the same type of media. When connected to the D5, the new high-speed WT-6 Wireless Transmitter allows you to transfer images to a computer or an FTP server over a wireless network, at a range of up to 200m.
