Sigma announces 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN | Art lens

Sigma has announced the 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN | Art lens, a fast zoom lens with a relatively unique focal length offering. 

Sigma claims the lens is the first constant aperture F1.8 zoom lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras.

The new lens comes in mounts for both Sony E-and L-Mount, and consists of 18 elements in 15 groups, including five SLD and three aspherical elements.

In fact, Sigma claims that the new glass achieves image quality comparable to prime lenses and that it exceeds the performance of its own 24mm F1.4 DG DN and 50mm F1.4 DG DN Art lenses.

Inside, a rounded 11-bladed iris diaphragm creates attractive bokeh, at least according to Sigma, and the lens focuses down to 30 cm, achieving a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4 at 45mm.

Sigma is targeting videographers with this new lens. The lens's autofocus is driven by an HLA (high-response linear actuator) motor, and Sigma says the optics are designed to minimise focus breathing when focusing. An internal zoom design should also make it easier to use on gimbals.

Other features include a lockable aperture ring, a click/de-click switch allowing for clickless aperture changes and two customisable buttons. 

The Sony E-mount version weighs a pretty hefty 950 grams, while the L-Mount version weighs 960 grams and is 151.4 mm long. Both lenses are supplied with a lens hood, front and rear caps and a protective carry case.

No pricing has been announced yet, but the 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN | Art lens will be available in late June 2024. Check out Sigma's Australian website for more.
