The call for entries for Australia’s Top Emerging Photographers 2016 is now open. Capture’s annual competition, now in its eighth year, aims to uncover the next big stars of photography. The competition is open to both Australian and New Zealand photographers with less than four years’ experience working as a professional photographer. Note that those with no experience working as a professional photographers are also welcome to enter.

How to enter

Photographers are invited to submit entries for either the Emerging categories or the Student category. Those entering the former may enter as many categories as they wish, excluding Student, and may make multiple entries to the same category with different portfolios of image. Those entering the Student category must meet the requirements, as set out on the website, and are not permitted to enter any other categories.

Each submission must include six images. Images can be uploaded directly to the competition website, and must adhere to the file naming standard as outlines in the website.

Prizes

The total prize pool for the competition is valued at more than $15,000, including a cash prize of $5,000 to the overall winner. The overall winner, Australis’s Top Emerging Photographer, will also receive a Fujifilm X-T1 camera and XF 18-135mm lens, valued at $2,599. Category winners will share in a prize pool of over $7,000, including a cash prize of $500 per category winner. Prizes have been provided by our wonderful sponsors, and include: EIZO, CATC, Fujifilm, Goal Zero, Momento Pro, National Portrait Gallery, Sally Brownbill and Sunstudios.

How to win

Simply submit your very finest work. A panel of judges, anywhere for four to seven) will score the work and indicate their favourite five portfolios. Once the weighted scores are tallied, category winners will be established.

Each year, we ask the esteemed judges to provide constructive feedback and advice as to how they feel submissions could have been improved, and what they would have liked to have seen. To view the judges’ comments, get your hands on a copy of the May/June 2015 edition of the magazine. During January, we’ll be reproducing some of their comments and suggestions on the website.

Over the last seven years, Capture is proud to have stood behind this initiative, thrusting those photographer in the early stages of their careers into the limelight. Past winners have gone to lead very successful careers, many subsequently being recognised for their talents in other high profile national and international contests.
