Profile – Ami Vitale
From war zones to helping save our endangered megafauna. Over the last few years, Ami Vitale’s name has become almost synonymous with images of the world’s dwindling megafauna. After her documentation of the last white rhinos and the efforts to mitigate their extinction, Vitale has moved on to cover similar efforts around the globe, most notably in her coverage of China’s giant panda recovery for National Geographic. But the road to shooting arguably some of the planet’s most important stories for some of its biggest publications was not a simple one for Vitale.
The art of self expression
Some of the photography world’s most gifted artists provide a valuable insight into self-portraiture, and why they do it. Vincent van Gogh created a collection of 50 self-portraits, albeit painted. Andy Warhol is famous for his. So are Surrealism artists, Man Ray and Salvador Dali. This is not to say that self-portraits make you famous, but that creators have been representing themselves in their art for a very long time. Their reasons are fascinating. Their rewards, unexpected.
The gender gap
We investigate exactly why women are so poorly represented in photojournalism. Last year, World Press Photo and the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism published a startling statistic: only 15% of news photographers are women. At a time when diversity is being advocated in all fields, photojournalism remains mysteriously homogenous in comparison to other photographic genres.
Copyright theft
Top photographers share their most effective strategies to protect IP. If you think you’ve never had one of your images stolen, you’re not looking hard enough. But, does it really matter? What can you do about it? And is there reward in the outcome of fighting image theft?
Thinking outside the frame
What is creativity, and how can you get more of it? That creativity is important in photography is a given. What’s not so clear, is where creativity comes from, where it sometimes disappears to, and how it can be nurtured and developed in those times when it’s sadly lacking. We get to the root of photography’s most important question.
