Tamara Dean wins $25,000 Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award
Tamara Dean has been awarded the $25,000 2018 Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award for her image, Sacred Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) in Autumn from the series In our Nature 2017. The winning image was chosen by the 2018 award judge, Cherie McNair, director and CEO of the Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney, who selected Dean from a shortlist of 45 finalists. It will become part of the permanent collection of Australian photography at the Gallery at HOTA (Home of the Arts) on the Gold Coast.
Of the winning work, McNair said: ““Tamara Dean creates work that confirms photography’s veracity in the 21st century. Collaboration and connection with contemporary issues are coupled with a quiet introspection and exploration of ritual”. She went on to say that “Dean has a distinctive ability to capture important moments, very much reflective of her career as a photojournalist. This attribute extends into her art practice, imbuing important moments with a Pre-Raphaelite, otherworldly quality”.
An additional $25,000 for acquisitions was also awarded to selected finalists this year. They included: Abdul Abdullah - Delegated risk management from the Weddings series 2017; Tony Albert, David C. Collins, and Kieran Smythe-Jackson - Warakurna Superheroes #5 2017; Kai Wasikowski – Realtree #4 2018, and Honey Long and Prue Stent – Salt Pool 2018.
Works by all 45 finalists will be displayed in the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award 2018 Exhibition in the Gallery at HOTA, from 20 October to 25 November.
