TIME Magazine's latest iPhone covers and portfolio

American photographer, Chase Jarvis once famously stated, “The best camera is the one that's with you”, and in many instances, that might well be your smartphone. Well, for TIME magazine’s Director of Photography and Visual Enterprise, Kira Pollack, the work of 28-year-old Brazilian photographer Luisa Dörr was so captivating and engaging that the photographer was commissioned to shoot a very special project for TIME. The project, FIRSTS, features 46 prominent and influential women who are changing the world.

Pollack had never heard of Luisa Dörr previously, and the chance discovery was made while she was browsing Instagram. “I was instantly lured down the magical scroll of @luisadorr's feed. There were countless images of women of all ages against ethereal yet raw landscapes,” Pollack writes. She came across Dörr’s feed (53k followers), and was drawn in by the strength of the work. She also noted that Dörr had written on her bio that “All photos made with the iPhone”.

Dörr was commissioned to shoot 46 portraits and 12 covers, all on the iPhone. In an interview with TIME, she noted that the pictures were all captured with natural light, and a reflector was used only when necessary. “I like the simplicity of how these pictures are made. But the best part is that as a photographer, you feel extremely light and free. It is almost as if I can make pictures with my hand. There’s no noise, gadgets, tools or plugs—just the subject and myself,” Dorr said.

Images were captured on iPhone 5, 6, 6S Plus, and 7, and Dorr uses the regular camera, shooting to a square crop. For her images, she was allowed between two and twenty minutes with each.

More of Luisa Dörr’s work can be found on her website and Instagram. The FIRSTS project can be found on it's own website.
