10 great street photographers to follow on Instagram
Street photography has seen a resurgence in the past few years. And for good reason. It’s one of the most accessible yet rewarding genres of photography there is. It has a documentary realness to it. No pre-production, no lugging of studio lights. No set designing, styling, hair & makeup. No huge expensive telephotos. No tripods. No ‘team’ egos to deal with. It’s just you, a very basic camera set up, and the will to loiter with purpose. Or to put it another way, you go for a walk and you take your camera - then hope for that perfect combination of right place, right time, right lens and right settings.
A street photography mission can be full of anticipation, randomness and reward. Some days you can come home with nothing, other days you may get a string of images. In a way it’s like fishing. You can set out to purposefully document a series of related images, just shoot a bunch of random happenings or collect themed images over several years. For example, years ago I collected images over the space of 2 years which were green and then had a photo exhibition called… Green.
The 10 international photographers below stand out from the pack for a number of reasons: perfect composition; timing; intriguing centre(s) of interest; general unusualness; use of colour, contrast and shapes; and as the French would say–a bit of 'je ne sais quoi'.
