Alexia professional and student grants open for entries

The call for submissions for the 2023 Alexia grants is now open, and will fund new projects or work in progress. Submissions may be made by both professionals and students until 9 February. The grants are designed to help visual storytellers produce projects that inspire change and foster understanding by addressing significant topics around the world. As well as this, a diversity of creators, issues, and approaches is encouraged.

“It’s important to realize that the written proposal carries a tremendous amount of weight in the selection process,” explains The Alexia Endowed Chair Bruce Strong, who encourages applicants to thoughtfully craft the written components of the submission. He further explains, “When it comes to the imagery, we’re open to a variety of visual approaches. The bottom line is, we’re looking for work that shows the applicant has the skills and vision to produce a compelling project.”

The recipient of the professional grant will receive $20,000 to produce their chosen project, while the student grant recipient will receive a $1,000 stipend to advance their proposed project, a fellowship for tuition and fees to enrol in three courses during a semester at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University in New York, and a paid position to serve as a research assistant to The Alexia chair.

From a field of over 250 project proposals from more than 50 nations, the recipient of the 2022 professional grant was Danielle Villasana, with her project, Abre Camino, while the student grant went to Caitlin Eddolls for her project, Eight Hundred.

Through a partnership with African Women in Photography, The Authority Collective, Diversify Photo, The Everyday Projects, Femgrafía, Foto Feminas, Indigenous Photograph, Magnum Foundation, VII Foundation, Visura, and Women Photograph, The Alexia is offering a limited number of submission fee waivers for the professional category; student entries are free. Photographers and filmmakers who cannot afford the $50 professional submission fee and who are members of one of the partner organizations listed above can apply for a waiver from their organization per the instructions in the submission rules section
