Aputure announces Amaran 150C/300C full-colour LED lights
As many stills photographers make the jump to include video production, the option of using powerful, reasonably priced LED lights instead of strobe has become a reality. For freezing action or balancing outdoor daylight with stills, LEDs are not ideal. But for basic studio portraits or even product shots, daylight balanced LEDs are powerful enough to shoot at 100-400 ISO and get professional results. The concept of shooting both stills and video with the same lights can not only save you money, but also cut down on weight, transport issues and set up time.
Adding colour
Using coloured lights (or gels) can really make your work stand out. It's also a relatively easy way to add a coloured background instead of purchasing coloured paper rolls.
If you wanted to use coloured gels with daylight balanced lights, one problem is that it decreases your maximum output by up to 2/3rds of a stop. You also run into multiple issues which make gels a pain to deal with including: overheating and melting the gels; the cost of multiple gel kits; the storage and transportation of ungainly gel kits; the actual awkward adaptation of the gels into light shapers such as domes and softboxes.
This is where the Amaran 150C / 300C full-colour LEDs can easily add some exciting looks to your work. Being compatable with Bowens mount means that you have a multitude of reasonably priced modifiers readily available. The coloured lights may be more expensive and heavier with lower output than the equivalent daylight balanced lights, but they rid you of all those previously mentioned issues which can deter you from using gels in the first place.
