I had initially used a fine mix of tuna oil and flake to lay a scent trail to attract the shark (licenced) but the shark was never actually fed.

Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year call for entries

Entries for the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year competition are now open to professional, emerging, and junior photographers from around the world. Images submitted must have been taken in Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica, and New Guinea.

For 2023, a new Macro category has been introduced and and prize money for category winners and the Junior winner and runner-up has been increased.

Owned and produced by the South Australian Museum, the competition celebrates the year’s best wildlife and landscape photos, illustrating the splendour of our natural world, while also depicting the harsh reality of human impact on nature.

Last year the competition attracted 2,443 entries from more than 600 photographers worldwide.

Prizes

  • Category winners (including Portfolio Prize) will receive $1,500 (up $500)
  • Junior winner will receive $500 (up $200)
  • Junior runner-up will receive $250 (up $150)

The overall prize winner will be awarded $10,000 and a holiday prize courtesy of Coral Expeditions.

Chrissie Goldrick, Editor-in-chief of Australian Geographic stated: “It’s encouraging to see this competition constantly growing and responding to the times. As we witness the growing pressures faced by our natural environments, it’s become more vital than ever that we use this opportunity to focus our lenses on all that is most beautiful, fragile and precious about our unique region of the planet.”

Entries until 27 January 2023. To enter visit: www.samuseum.sa.gov.au/c/npoty/
