This photo shows an Adélie penguin standing on an iceberg off Devil Island, Antarctica. I like how the half-lit, sea-eroded iceberg gives the scene a sense of dichotomy. Perhaps the penguin's indecision on which way to go, or perhaps ours.

Australians amongst Smithsonian Magazine’s 2019 Photo Contest Finalists

The finalists of the 17th annual Smithsonian magazine photo contest have recently been announced. A total of 60 images were selected from more than 36,000 entries submitted by photographers from 145 countries and territories.

The competition features a total of six categories: Natural World, American Experience, Travel, People, Altered Images, and Mobile.

Two Australians, Drew Hopper (People) and Alfonso Calero (Altered Images), are included in the top 60. Visit the Smithsonian website to see all the finalists, as well as vote for your favourite image.
