Ballarat International Foto Biennale Opens

Today marks the beginning of the 10th edition of the Ballarat International Foto Biennale. This year’s theme is ‘The Real Thing’ which is a provocation and a nostalgic call to come and see what is real.

Founded in 2005 as a small regional exhibition, the festival has become a two month visual and interactive smorgasbord featuring 60 events from over 100 local and international photographers.

Events in the festival include artist talks, workshops, a bookfair, portfolio reviews, discussion panels, public forums, a portrait prize and of course many exhibitions.

Headlining the event is Platon – the portrait artist who has photographed more world leaders than anyone else in history in his inimitable style. Other artists include Erik Johansson, Vineet Vohra, Andrew Quilty, Lauren CrookeStephen Dupont and William Yang to name just a few.

Last night’s official opening gala night revealed that Ballarat has been chosen to develop a National Centre of Photography (bravo!). On the whole, the Festival has been a boon to the region bringing over 30,000 visitors to help the local economy and showcase this historically fascinating, photogenic city and its surrounds.

The Capture team highly recommends making the effort to make a visit to this artistically inclined city and remarkable festival. As the name suggests, it is only on once every two years – so make the most of it.
