Blackmagic Design has announced the Blackmagic PYXIS 12K, a new digital film camera that uses a 12K RGBW sensor within the flexible original 6K PYXIS camera design.

It features the same sensor as the URSA Cine 12K LF and offers 16 stops of dynamic range.

The camera includes dual CFexpress media recorders, 10G Ethernet, and Blackmagic Cloud global sync. It comes in three versions, allowing users to choose between L-Mount, PL, or Locking EF lens mounts.

Blackmagic PYXIS 12K supports a wide range of resolutions and frame rates, from HD up to DCI 4K, 6K, 8K, and 12K. Its multi-scale sensor allows users to shoot in 12K, 8K, or 4K using the full sensor area.

The 12K model captures up to 40 fps in 3:2 open gate, 60 fps in 2.4:1, and 112 fps in 4K. The 6K model delivers up to 36 fps at full sensor resolution and 60 fps in 4K DCI. This flexibility makes it suitable for a wide variety of cinematic workflows and creative shooting styles.

The camera features a built-in 4" high-resolution HDR touchscreen for monitoring and reviewing shots on set, eliminating the need for an external monitor. For more flexibility, the optional 5" Blackmagic PYXIS Monitor can be mounted anywhere and mirrors the camera's interface, making it ideal for rigs that obstruct the built-in screen. A compatible Blackmagic URSA Cine EVF is also available, offering a high-quality OLED display with adjustable optics for accurate handheld or outdoor shooting.

Blackmagic PYXIS records in Blackmagic RAW for maximum post-production flexibility, along with real-time H.264 HD proxies for fast cloud uploads.

Dual CFexpress card slots and a USB-C expansion port support direct-to-disk recording and hot swapping. The system enables real-time media transfer to Blackmagic Cloud and DaVinci Resolve, streamlining remote collaboration.

Rigging is made easier with interchangeable side plates that offer multiple mounting options and SSD support for recording or live streaming.

The Blackmagic PYXIS 12K will be available in July from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide for US$4,995 – which is approximately AU$8,400 (+GST)
