Canon Australia has introduced the RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM, its 50th lens in the RF lineup, priced at $1,919 RRP.
This versatile zoom lens, featuring a constant f/2.8 aperture, is a mid-tiered lens with purportedly high image quality while maintaining portability.
It is of a collapsible / retractable zoom design, meaning the lens has to be unlocked and zoomed before using. While it's nice to have a compact retractable lens, the tradeoff is not being able to shoot immediately.
It’s an ideal upgrade for those looking to expand their creative toolkit without adding bulk, or for students (with a job) and prosumers who don't want to fork out $3,288 for the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM lens.
While we look at this as a 'mid-tiered' lens, the price does seems quite high in Australia – especially when this lens retails for $1,100 US dollars in the USA, which even after adding GST to a converted AU price, is still only $1,805 AU dollars.
Other comparable lenses are the excellent the RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM which retails for a reasonable $1,659; or the astounding, but incredibly bulky and heavy RF 28-70mm f2.0L USM which retails around $4,200+.
Suited for a variety of photography styles—from portraits to street and travel—the RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM is considered to be very sharp, has nice bokeh, is weather resistance and has up to 5.5 stops of optical image stabilisation.
At just 92.2mm long when retracted and weighing only 490g, the RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM is one of the lightest lenses in its class. Its lightweight design offers ease of use, while the Control/Focus ring allows for quick adjustments to shutter speed, aperture or ISO.
The RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM is priced at $1,919 RRP and is scheduled to be available in Australia in late September.
The camera will be supported by Canon Australia’s 5-year warranty when purchased from an authorised Canon Australia reseller.
