Just this week, Canon dropped a bunch of firmware updates for their professional range of cameras.
While all cameras received enhances and fixes – many R5 users were hoping for a more substantial update. The highlight addition for the R5 is the 'IBIS High resolution shot' which allows you to capture a 400MP image.
It works by moving the sensor incrementally 9 times and stitches the images together. The catch is you should have the camera mounted on a tripod and use a cable release. Also, the subject has to be perfectly still otherwise you will get digital artifacts.
Here is a great short demo from Pictureline on how it works.
The buzz online is that many industry R5 users would rather more practical updates such as:
• The ability to shoot 3-5 shots per second in electronic shutter mode (currently it is only 1 or 20 frames per second)
• Removal of 30 minute video record limit.
• Enhanced autofocus features (like R6 Mark II)
• Lens breathing compensation
Rumour has it that Canon will be releasing incremental firmwares up to the release of the R5 Mark II.
