This week marks the 50th anniversary of Canon's operations in Australia.
In 1973, Repco – Australia's leading automotive parts maker at the time, and Canon Inc of Japan formed a joint venture to make and market a revolutionary type of photocopying machine. The Melbourne based business was known as Repco Canon Pty Ltd.
In 1979, Canon Australia was established and relocated to Sydney where it began to manage all Canon products including cameras, printing and other imaging products.
After expanding its operations to New Zealand, the company became known as Canon Oceania and now employs 2,400 people across 22 locations.
Beyond imaging, Canon has expanded into medical care, industrial equipment, surveillance and commercial printing sectors.
Commenting on the 50th anniversary, Kotaro Fukushima, Managing Director of Canon Oceania, said:
“As an organisation, we want to grow alongside our communities – when they thrive, we do too. Celebrating Canon’s 50th year in Oceania is the perfect backdrop against which to honour those who have shared in our journey. Today, I am honoured to lead a company with a proud history. Building on the hard work of our predecessors, we are determined to focus our efforts to continue creating a brighter future.”
