Where do you start with someone like Howard Schatz? After initially working as an eye surgeon, Howard went 'all-in' on becoming one of the worlds best sports photographers, and then onto what would be – one of the most prolific photographers that you will ever encounter.
His work transcends the sport arena and explores the human form with spell binding studio work that utilises so many skills including underwater, multi-strobe and fascinating long exposures.
He has already published 24 photography books, featured in countless exhibitions, campaigns and awards. He's even been a judge for our inaugural Capture Awards!
Released at the end of 2023 is his latest photography book 'Pairs'. It's an exploration of the relationship between two subjects and the visual, graphic, emotional, social, physical and even spiritual dynamic that results from the pairing.
It features an incredible range of people from athletes to movie stars to dancers, artists, models and other interesting characters.
When quizzed on what the book is about, Howard has said "I am in search of the electric, sometimes eccentric and always compelling connections possible with a combination of two whether dancers, athletes, mothers and newborns, gymnasts and even inanimate objects. Sometimes they were brought together intentionally: I’ve found other images that speak to each other in ways I had not previously noticed. The connections are sometimes subtle, sometimes not.
I’ve scoured for pairings of every sort. Not necessarily the Shakespearean form of heroic couplets, but couplets nevertheless. I have tried to look for both the unexpected and the unusual in my art. A photographic odyssey into the world of twos is a natural outgrowth of my ongoing search for surprise and delight. I continue to make new images in pursuit of this quest."
