Magnum Photos “The Unexpected” Square Print Sale starts soon

Another Square Print Sale has just been announced by Magnum Photos. With the sale starting on 22 March and running for just one week until 28 March, a collection of over 90 prints will be available for US$100 each. They represent the breadth and variety not only of the practices and outlooks within Magnum’s membership, but also of what photography can convey and capture.

The theme of the sale celebrates the unpredictability of life and explores the happy accidents and unusual turns of events that lead to memorable images. All 6x6” prints are by Magnum Photos photographers and are either signed or estate-stamped.

Over more than seven decades, Magnum photographers have reported on and witnessed events around the world which changed societies, nations, and peoples in unpredictable ways. Some key artworks included in the sale are Stuart Franklin’s image of an unarmed man stepping in front of a tank during the 1989 government crackdown on student protesters in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, Susan Meiselas’ 1979 photograph of Pablo 'Bareta' Arauz in Nicaragua launching a Molotov cocktail at the National Guard HQ, Paul Fusco’s series of images taken from the moving train that carried Robert F Kennedy’s body across the United States, Raymond Depardon’s photograph of a youth sat astride the Berlin Wall on 11 November, 1989, Cristina de Middel’s image — from her series The Afronauts — recreating a little-known historical space program, and so many more depicting the unexpected, unpredictable moments in history.

© Ian Berry. Ras al-Hadd near Sur, Oman. 2004. “While travelling through Oman, I came across this fort near Sur. Always on the lookout for the unexpected, I spotted these children playing with kites fashioned from plastic shopping bags. As happens maybe once a year, all the elements – kids, kites, bike, goats, even the telegraph wires – slotted together to make the shape and capture a joyous moment.”

© Olivia Arthur. Kids at Ski Dubai, Dubai. U.A.E. 2013. “One of the more surreal experiences I’ve had was a visit to Ski Dubai, a large indoor ski slope with sub-zero temperatures and real snow. You take a lift up to the top of the nearly half-kilometer long slope and halfway down you can stop at a little wooden hut and have a hot drink or snack. Standing outside with my coffee, under a gas-heater, in what is essentially a giant freezer in a desert, I couldn't help thinking about the crazy lengths we go to entertain ourselves.”
