Minimalism in Photography
Minimalism in Photography, recently published by teNeues features 15 internationally renowned and new minimalist photographers, including Maarten Rots, Natalie Christensen, Matthieu Vernot, Nina Papiorek, Maria Svarbov, and Sarah & Lucy Jenkins, to name a few.
Australians featured include Sarah & Lucy Jenkins and Brad Walls. An image by Sarah & Lucy Jenkins, It’s Called Compromise, which won the Single Shot category of Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographers in 2021, is featured along with 15 other images they shot.
The trend towards minimalism is reflected in the worlds of home living, environmental awareness, and mindfulness, to be sure, but it is also reflected in art and photography. The minimalist photographer's eye directs the viewer's gaze to the aesthetics of the ordinary, transforming them into something extraordinary, something inspiring. The resulting photographs always use clean lines, often arranged in geometric compositions.
Minimalist artists borrow their motifs from everyday life. They can be schematic depictions of topography, or purely two-dimensional, abstract compositions. Sometimes they are detailed, sometimes large-scale. The point is always reduction.
