People's Choice winners revealed – The Mono Awards 2022
The winners of the 4th annual edition of The Mono Awards, presented by SanDisk, were recently announced, but we also asked the people what they thought, and the people have spoken! We're thrilled to bring you the results of voting in the People’s Choice for this year's competition.
Run by Capture and Australian Photography, the competition celebrates the finest black-and-white photography across Australia and New Zealand and is open to photographers from amateur to professional. Entrants could submit work in any of the three categories: Animals, People, Places.
Category winners of the People’s Choice each receive a 12-month print and digital subscription to Capture magazine and a 12-issue print and digital subscription to Australian Photography, worth $157.
The winners
Animals
Taking out the Animals category was Kelly Pilgrim-Byrne's striking image, From the Horse's Mouth, which won with 346 votes.
People
Taking out the People category with 433 votes was Jaziel Aguiña with his image Warangku, which depicts the photographer's friend.
"In 1963, the government ordered the closure of his former community (Old Mapoon)," says Jaziel.
"Those who wanted to stay were forcibly removed by the police, who later set the community on fire. He was just a child when this happened, and was forcibly relocated with his family."
Places
In the Places category, Alex McNaught's image, Whimsical Windfarm, took out first place for the People's Choice with a staggering 604 votes at competition close.
