SanDisk launches Desk Drive, a new 8TB Desktop SSD

SanDisk has launched a new new 8TB SSD designed for desktop use, the SanDisk Desk Drive.

Western Digital (SanDisk's parent company) is calling the new drive the highest-capacity external desktop SSD on the market.

That said, with read speeds maxing out at 1000MB/s, it's not amazingly fast, especially for an SSD. 

SanDisk says the drive has a single USB-C (USB 3.2 Gen 2) slot for data transfer and its power supply comes from a separate power cord port. It also has a Kensington Security Slot.

The new drive comes in 4TB and 8TB capacities, and is a small 99 millimeters across and 40 millimeters tall. It weighs just 268 grams.

“As digital content creation continues to soar, there is an increasing need for high-performing and high-capacity storage solutions to help manage and preserve it. Expanding our SSD portfolio is the first step in offering creators backup solutions that deliver the speed and flexibility they need to unlock their creativity,” says Susan Park, Vice President, Consumer Solutions, Western Digital.

No local pricing or availability has been confirmed as of yet, but the 4TB version is currently available for $380 ($578 AUD) in the US, and the 8TB size is $700 USD ($1,064 AUD).
