Sony announces $4,400 FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G lens

Alongside a budget friendly 16mm F/1.8 G ultra-wide-angle prime lens, Sony has launched a super-telephoto zoom lens: the FE 400-800mm F/6.3-8 G OSS.

The release of the lens means Sony's FE optics now cover all focal lengths from 12mm up to 800mm.

The FE 400-800mm F/6.3-8 G OSS is a large piece of glass - it has an outside diameter of 11.9cm, and is 34.6cm long. It also weighs a hefty 2.47kg.

According to Sony, the lens has an internal zooming design which means the centre of gravity should remain the same when zooming. Internally, it's made up of 27 elements in 19 groups, including six ED glass elements. The minimum focusing distance is 1.7m at 400mm and 3.5m at 800mm

On the exterior, which is dust and moisture resistant, the lens barrel has three focus hold buttons, an AF/MF focus mode switch, a full-time direct manual focus (DMF) switch, a switch to turn on and off the Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation (and change the type of stabilisation) and a focus range limiter with three settings: full, 10m – near, and 8m to infinity.

The front element has a fluorine coating to help repel water/oil, and help with cleaning.

Autofocus is managed by two linear motors, which should provide fast, precise, and quiet AF performance.

The FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS will be available in Australia from March for $4,399 AUD.
