Sony announces the FE 85mm F1.4 GMII

Sony has just unveiled the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II (SEL85F14GM2), a high-end lens that reportedly delivers an exceptional mix of sharp resolution, beautiful bokeh, and quick autofocus within a compact form. Sony considers it to be a lightweight portrait lens that is also ideal for filmmaking.

The G Master (GM) series is Sony's highest-ranked, professional level, weather-resistant lens line for mirrorless cameras. They are the equivalent of Nikon's S-Line or Canon's L-series.

Sony supplied image shot with 85mm F1.4 GM II.

As a second-generation model, this lens builds upon the successful optical design of its predecessor, which received acclaim for its harmonious blend of bokeh and resolution, and incorporates cutting-edge technology.

For stills, autofocus is reportedly three times faster, and seven times faster for image tracking compared to its predecessor – though this is dependent on which model camera you are using, with the Alpha A1 and A9III being at the top of the bunch.

Compared to the current 85mm F1.4 GM1, the weight of the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II (642 grams) is approximately 20% lighter and 13% smaller in volume, which is achieved through the latest mechanical technology and optical design.

The lens features two XA (extreme aspherical) elements and two ED (extra-low dispersion) elements, which work together to minimize aberrations and provide consistent resolution from corner to corner. Additionally, Sony’s Nano AR Coating II technology minimizes flare and ghosting, ensuring images are clear and crisp.

The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II will be available in Australia from September 2024 for RRP: $3,099 AUD.

You can read more about the lens on the Sony AU website.
