Anastasia Photo (Gallery) has been a long established physical gallery located in New York. They specialise in documentary photography and photojournalism and curate exhibitions and public programming around issues of social and environmental importance.

Unfortunately in the post pandemic world, with the cost of living spiralling out of control and rental space being at a premium – it is not an easy time for galleries.

To adjust to the current economic climate, Anastasia Photo has become an online only gallery. Of course they display photographers work in traditional web image format, but they also use online software called Kunstamatrix (kunst is German for 'art') to simulate a 'real life' exhibitions.

From July 26 to November 17 2023, Anastasia Photo is exhibiting the Australian photographer Philip Thurston's beautiful wave imagery. By visiting the exhibition page you can opt to 'enter exhibition' and wander around in a virtual gallery.

While this could be misconstrued as a bit of a novelty - the software itself can also be customised to emulate a particular real world space, which means you could use it to pre-visualise your work in situ before printing and installing. This would also assist in creating a 'flow' to the exhibition as well as helping decide what size and which hero images can fit where.

So if you run a real world gallery, this software could be used to 'demo' the space to artists – as well as give an indication to prospective art buyers of what the framed artwork would look like in terms of size and scale.

Kunstamatrix has numerous plans ranging from trial to full customisation.

You can also see more of Thurston's work on his website.
