Meaghan Paul, Adolphe (Portrait (2019))
"Adolphe" is the result of an evolution of a creative personal project. Taking inspiration from photographers who recreated paintings, I fell in love with the work of William Adolphe Bougereau. However, rather than recreate his images I drew upon his ideas and style. The black and white images emerged from the project but are not true to the Adolphe style or theme. It was a natural evolution. "Adolphe" has been a project of love and a collaboration between my 7 year old daughter and myself - my subject. She generates ideas and chooses her own "poses" after exploring the work of William Adolphe. She is very similar in age and likeness to Adolphe's models. I feel there is an agreeable meeting space in these images between traditional French pastoral/peasant themes and the Italian Masters William studied under, and an emerging colonial Australian theme. These images invited me to reflect on the colonial Australian children in this wild place.
