L. LaBarthe, Architectural Heritage and History (Architecture)

Australia is full of forgotten buildings which are a testament to the human need to create a built space, to provide shelter and community in this multicultural landscape of ours. Many techniques have been lost with time while the structures remain--in whole or in part--and much can be learnt from these built environs not just about the methodology, structural integrity and development of architecture and building technology but also about the people who used these places and what they used them for. New Australians from all over the globe came and made their lives and some of those took lessons from Indigenous Australians, learning techniques and best uses of habitat, how to live in harmony within the land and endure the harshness that the Australian landscape can provide. Long, dry summers, wet winters or no winters at all have shaped the buildings and the history of the built environment and how we adapt and inhabit our created architecture.
