William Thomson, Barkly Community (Doco/Photojournalism (2019))

The Barkly Community is a vast landscape, with a large landmass and sparse population (approx 7,000 in an area larger than Victoria). The days are hot and even more so in the summer, the dust gets everywhere and the few moments it rains, it pours. The Barkly Region has been been under much negative press as of 2018, with tragic news involving a child has reaching national headlines. This has caused a huge impact to the community as a whole in more ways than one. I've been working for an Arts company since late 2017. Our work tries to give a platform to the positive initiatives in the region, ranging from Music,to artwork, and photography Since moving to Tennant, I've made it my goal to not be like many others who travel through and be an outsider observing, but try to involve myself in a part of Australia that I never knew existed. I was grateful to be a part of such a close community, and I'm very fortunate to be able to live in such a part of what really seems to be the truest part of Australia.
