Sandra Sanders, Battler (Art 2020)
When depression comes, it takes over your mind – but it also takes over your body. According to the World Health Organization, more than 300 million people of all ages suffer from depression globally. It is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Yet depression is often stigmatized, misunderstood, and mischaracterized because of how difficult it is to explain what it’s like to experience it. ‘Battler’ captures the embodied experience of depression. This work aims to witness and give voice to those living with depression whilst communicating what depression is like to those who haven’t experienced it.
