Jordan Robins, Bioluminescent Algae (LANDSCAPE 2021)

Bioluminescent algae lighting up the shoreline in Jervis Bay and electric blue. The micro algae Noctiluca Scintillans produces a bright blue glow at night when it is disturbed by wind and wave action. I had been for a walk on the beach late one afternoon in April last year and saw the algae in the water, which is a bright pinkish red colour during the day. Hoping it would still be there that night I headed down to the beach after dark to see if it was still there and much to my luck it was. Arriving at the beach I could see the shoreline lighting up a bright blue was waves crashed upon the shore, I could barely contain my excitement. This natural occurrence generally only happens once or twice a year and on this particular night the sky was free of clouds and the milky way was in the lower part of the sky, making for some incredible photo opportunities. I stayed out till 4am photographing the incredible bioluminescence, only going home because my last battery ran out. All images are single exposures.
