huw rodgers, brutalist (Architecture (2019))

This is a series that contemplates the stark, brutalist architecture built throughout Australia during the cold war era. my aim was to draw one’s eye to the striking angles of these buildings which reflect beauty where beauty is not always seen. The use of strong shadows with high contrast black and white accentuates the imposing, if not dystopian design of these buildings. Captured mainly at dawn, I was able to harness the muted light available, emulating the style and compositions of Lucien Hervé. With subjects throughout Victoria and New South Wales, this series has given me the opportunity and time to look carefully at the built environment, which resonated with my state of mind at the time. Recently losing my best friend I needed an outlet to come to terms with what had happened. Spending time alone wandering around these imposing buildings has helped me heal greatly.
