Samara Achermann, Communication Between Giants (ANIMAL 2025)

I captured these images during the migration of Humpback Whales along the Western Australian coastline. In these images the humpbacks display what is believed to be common forms of communication between each other, breaching and tail slaps. Often times when one whale begins to perform these behaviours, you may see another whale close by begin to do the same thing as a response. Not only are these behaviours for communication but also for fun. Watching these gentle giants migrate through our coastlines has been one of my favourite events to be a part of.
