Todd Henry, Deportees of Tonga (Doco/Photojournalism (2019))

There are currently 700+ deportees living in the South Pacific Kingdom of Tonga. All were born in Tonga and then lived for significant lengths of time overseas before being deported back to the islands after serving prison sentences for a range of crimes. Adjusting to life back in the islands is a difficult task for many, especially those who immersed themselves in the gang cultures of the USA, Australia or New Zealand prior to deportation. Due to cultural differences, deportees are often stigmatized by members of wider Tongan society and a significant deportee community has formed in and around the capital of Nuku'alofa. This entry is part of a longer, ongoing photographic piece and features several American, Australian and New Zealand deportees that have been deported permanently back to Tonga.
