julia Howe, Depression unseen (BLACK & WHITE 2022)

This triptych investigates the concept of 'unseen emotions', providing a visual representation for how one may be feeling internally, despite how that may appear to those around them. Particularly under the lens of depression. Highlighting how whilst someone may appear happy, they might be instead at breaking point. This series highlights the juxtaposition between such, as evident in the contrasting emotions and moods, between the first image of a seemingly happy young girl, and the last, whereby she is seen partially submerged in a lake. The work intends to evoke concern from viewers and encourages them to consider it when interacting with their loved ones, to ask how they are rather than assume on the basis of facial expressions.
