Heather Raadgever, Distraction (Art (2018))
Distraction came to me when I needed it most in the form of ballet classes. For 90 minutes at a time, the meditative process of coordinating limbs and mind to the notes of a piano leaving no room for anything else. Such an alien feeling, trying to occupy space with presence, rather than collapsing inward. Improvement came in such tiny nuances as to not be visible at all; a transient process of constant adjustment. I lost myself searching for the delicate balance between maintaining control and letting go. I found in myself an acceptance that perfection will always be the goal, but never the outcome. For 90 minutes at a time, I practiced the art of ballet, and the art of distraction.
