Stephen Fellenberg, Emerged and ready to fly (DOCO 2021)

It is not Summer in Australia without the sound of cicadas in the background. Pictured is the Double Drummer (Thopha saccata) emerging after some 7 years underground. These cicadas usually emerge during the day and are found from late October to early March, sometimes in quite large numbers. This species is found on parts of Queensland’s coast and almost the entire length of the NSW coastline. With over 200 species of cicadas in Australia the Double Drummer is a very charismatic part of our insect biodiversity.
