Matthew Portch, Forgotten Palms (Landscape 2020)

Navigating the West of the United States can reveal nothing but a barren and sombre landscape. Every now and then, sporadically scattered over this desolate panorama, a mystical oasis of palm trees appear. Dead or alive, they stand defiant to the elements of both man and nature. A totem reminder of the country’s wild heritage among the layers of freeways and concrete urban jungle. Some have been cultivated as a place of hope. Others appear like a graveyard to the hope that once was.
