Cassandra Alberto, Frozen in Time (BLACK & WHITE 2024)
Given the quickened rate of glacial retreat over the past few decades, it is important to appreciate the beauty of glaciers and their icebergs at a moment in time, as they are proof of how dynamic nature can be. Carving landscapes in mountain valleys over thousands of years, glaciers are a force of nature that evolved over many cycles of snowfall, melt, and movement. Banding of rocks and debris within the glacier, visible on the terminal face and surrounding icebergs, consist of what was once part of the valley’s ground where lateral moraines have formed. When calving events occur at the face, icebergs drift onto the lake at the mercy of climate conditions, ready to be moulded into unique sculptures before eventually melting into the lake.
