Jasmine Evans, Gesture (ART 2024)

This series is inspired by the poses and gestures of women depicted in typical Baroque paintings, recontextualised through the female gaze. These women, painted by men, were the object through which the ideals of divine beauty, piety, purity, virtue and status were conveyed. The gestures of their hands and the enigmatic expressions of their faces, usually the only parts of the body not swathed in fabric, have been subject to interpretation for centuries. As someone who shies away from being photographed, I wanted to project myself in a manner that was a departure from conventional representation and portraiture. Through revealing and concealing of my physical self and the use of the subtle gestures and the meaning that they can convey, I seek to represent an essence of myself.
