Melina Kelsey, I've Seen the Light (PORTRAIT 2024)
Greenwashing is a deceptive marketing practice to make products or services more environmentally friendly or sustainable than they actually are. This technique can mislead consumers to make environmentally responsible choices and can undermine efforts to address real environmental challenges. The committee of my Mid Century Modern building decided to replace all of the original 1960s bakelite fittings with plastic light fittings that are mass produced and imported. As part of the government program, the original light fittings were destroyed and have now ended up in landfill. The main components of landfill gas are methane and carbon dioxide, which are greenhouse gases. My series, a photographical mockumentary, captures how my living space has been impacted by the upgraded light, revealing the absurdities of the “energy-efficient”.
