Alice Mariette, In the water (DOCO 2021)
I have always loved the ocean, yet have only been fortunate enough to live by it for a few years in university when I lived in Coogee, Sydney. I often used to go to the local ocean baths and not only did I love swimming daily, but I also adored the community that existed in and around the water. People from all walks and ages of life came together to swim, float, bob and chat. It seems a pastime that exists across the country, in all bodies of water. With the travel limits set on us last year, my family and I discovered a local beach on the Redcliffe Peninsula in Brisbane and it was like I had come home, to a place where the water unites us. We've barely stayed away since, as I love swimming in the ocean again, but I also love observing how others spend their in the water. These are some of the images I have been taking over the past year in an exploration of how we use the ocean.
