Anna C Madden, Iron Women - Equality Will Not Forge Itself (DOCO 2023)
What better way is there to cut through a stereotype than with an angle grinder? That’s what the women of the Australian Blacksmiths Association (Victorian branch) are doing, as this photographic project illustrates. The image of a blacksmith as a muscular male with a hammer is now a dated stereotype. One visit to the ABAVic Women’s Group workshop will dispel that myth. The group is run by women, for women, and the mantra, “Equality is not going to forge itself” summarises their ethos. As each member works on their individual projects, the more experienced Smithies offer guidance and tips on techniques, and create a comfortable, safe and welcoming space. They share their successes and mistakes alike, fostering stronger bonds and a culture of learning. Long-time member, Corinne Loman Law, states that participants range from established blacksmiths and teachers, to artists looking for new forms of expression. “We are from a diverse range of backgrounds and areas, coming together to support each other and share our skills. It is a warm, supportive and inspiring environment.”
