Matthew Maguire, Island In My Head (DOCO 2022)

This project was captured on Moreton Island, Brisbane, Australia and features members of staff that worked for the resort. Working there I found myself often feeling isolated and stuck in my head part from the environment and the covid pandemic happening around me. With this project, I wanted to capture the staff in their natural environment and use the emotions I was feeling and witnessing from others working in the resort, as a contrast to the typical image of a resort (a place to escape and be at peace). Each image was a collaboration between myself and the subject, I decided my role would be to determine the composition and timing of the image and allowed the subject to decide on the location, posture and action/activity in the image. This ensured that I was capturing the subject as candidly as possible in respect to a planned portrait session.
