Lex Rudd, Kanyaka Station (LANDSCAPE 2023)

Kanyaka Station was, for a short time, one of the largest pastoral runs in the Flinders Ranges. It’s life was cut short by the expansion of wheat farming. Kanyaka Station was founded by Hugh Proby who took up the Kanyaka lease for cattle in 1851. Proby died in a tragic accident in 1852. John Phillips who inherited Kanyaka settled there and managed the run. Phillips built the massive station headquarters that grew into a small village housing 70 families. In 1862 the station office which doubled as a post office received 23,300 letters. The buildings were constructed using local stone and using lime mortar made from local limestone. Limestone was melted in kilns in the village to produce the required mortar. The resilience of these structures is surprising. The remaining buildings are now 170 years old. Our images depict some of the ruins. All images were taken with a Nikon Zii camera.
