Liz Barratt, Life on a Grass Tree (DOCO 2021)

This collection of photos are of the Australian Grass Tree (Xanthorrhoea) which grows in our bush areas. Some of the elderly specimens are among the oldest living plants in the world. The Aborigine People used the Grass Tree for food, drink and materials for tools. They are very resilient to bush fire and often flower as a direct result of fire, quickly bringing an essential food source to the surrounding birds, insects and other wildlife. These trees are also a source of food for butterflies, attracting a variety of species along with other insects.
