Todd Henry, Living Young in Rekohu (Doco/Photojournalism (2019))
Rekohu, also known as the Chatham Islands, is one of New Zealand's most remote outposts. These windswept islands, located 800km east of Christchurch, are home to a unique breed of hard-working and self-sufficient people. There are only 600 people spread across the expansive "main" island, and only one town that contains one shop, one restaurant and one bar. There is no high school on the island either so all Chatham Islanders must leave at some point to complete their studies in New Zealand. Many never return. The few young people between the ages of 18 and 40 that do make their way back to their native islands after high school lead a distinctively simple and isolated lifestyle. The photos that I have submitted represent the hallmarks of life on the islands for young people: Isolation, lots of time at sea gathering seafood for sustenance, training horses for the annual horse race, and beer drinking at the local rugby pitch.
