Chelle wallace, Mother (PORTRAIT 2022)

As an adult daughter, and now mother myself, I have felt grief for the many lenses (including my own) that have defined my mother and impossibly entangled her in paradigms that rarely served or regarded her. While attempting to communicate this, these images also depict the beauty she created in our childhood home...a focus which helped her, and many other women of her era, transcend what was a type of entrapment. I touch also on the vices that eased a longing for more, and the humour and joy that at 82, define her still.
