Claudia Caporn, Off To Market (SINGLE SHOT 2021)
An image from a larger series entitled, Just East of Now, which draws upon Sigmund Freud’s concept of the uncanny when documenting the idiosyncrasies of my hometown Quairading. Freud’s concept of the uncanny is one that asserts its presence through that which is simultaneously familiar but not known. The work concentrates on a self-effacing public art piece known as “The Grain Family” that is familiar to all residents. It is through the transcendence into night that the uncanny nature of the art is recognised when it assumes a somewhat menacing undertone that many would not be aware of, and creates a state of uneasiness provoked by the familiarity yet also the frightening oddity.
