Cameron Cope, Pabva Zizi Pagara Gondo - Where the Owl Left, the Eagle Comes to Sit (Documentary/Photojournalism)
'Pabva zizi pagara gondo' is a Shona expression that translates to 'where the owl left, the eagle comes to sit.' In Zimbabwe it's a refrain used when someone takes a recently vacated chair. This has become a metaphor for my visits to Zimbabwe, where I am getting to know the former industrial community of Redcliff that my long-term girlfriend grew up in. There I am a de-facto mukwasha (son-in-law) submerged in Shona culture and swept along by social currents outside of my control. These photographs record that experience, and help an eagle understand an owl’s perch from his own perspective.
